What was your first job?

My first job after high school was as a tour guide for Japanese tourists on the Gold Coast. This followed on from the time I spent in Japan as a Rotary Exchange Student where I became fairly fluent in Japanese.

Who are the people that have made the biggest difference in your career and why?

My Mum and Dad have both been inspirational for their lived examples of having a desire to make a difference through their service to the community and a heart for people.

This has led to me choosing a career in serving the community as an elected representative and my motto of service above self.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

Don’t just sit there and complain, do something about it.

Think back to five years ago. Did you envision your career as it is today?

Five years ago, I was the first female Speaker of the Queensland Parliament in 150 years, which was a huge honour for me, as well as being the Member for Maroochydore.

My first passion has always been to make a difference in our local community on the Sunshine Coast but I also have “fire in my belly” to see better government throughout Queensland. This remains a strong motivating factor for me.

How do you approach work – life balance?

Family is the most important thing. I try to plan balance as best I can but in my role I always need to be flexible as important issues can occur at the most inconvenient times.

What is your proudest moment in your career?

The most satisfying moment was when a woman came up to me to tell me she wouldn’t be alive without my help in getting her timely access to health services.  Her story has never been on the front page of a newspaper but it matters more to me.
