Self Care

Let’s get this clear up front ‘self -care’ is not being selfish.  Many of us give so much energy, time and compassion to those around us via the many roles we play – parent, spouse, sibling, colleague, employee, neighbour, volunteer and all round “yes” person; yet how much energy time and compassion do we give back to ourselves?

Self –care is about rituals, activities, decisions and awareness to put all the good things back in to maintain or enhance health, prevent disease, limit illness and restore mental and physical well-being.

I’m always intrigued by other people’s self- care regimes because they are so individual, what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another and believe me if you’re thinking it’s all about hot baths and candles (they have their merits) they don’t feature that heavily in most people’s lists.

What appeals to you when it comes to self –care? catch up with a friend, lift weights, get a haircut, go for a swim, go to a spa, meditate, go for a bush or beach walk, get a massage, do a puzzle, cook your favourite dish, do some gardening, read a book, hang out in a hammock, plan a trip, write in a journal, watch a movie, play with your pet, say “no” so you can “yes” to something that brings you joy, simply sit outdoors and watch the clouds go by or do something that gets your adrenaline pumping.

When it comes to our well-being there are eight dimensions that lead to a quality way of living- physical, spiritual, intellectual, emotional, social, family, occupational and financial. There might be blissful times where everything is in balance but that’s usually fleeting so think of it as ‘tilting’, pouring your attention into an area you acknowledge needs more attention such as creativity, play and healthy eating which might mean ‘tilting’ away from screen time, procrastination or unhealthy choices.

So pick some self – care activities or regimes that directly feed into the well-being dimension you acknowledge needs some attention, that’s self- love and definitely not being selfish.

What’s your go to self -care regime?
